Synopsis

Think Azumanga Diaoh meets Sailor Moon.

Yuzu and her sisters are shrine maidens charged with keeping the spirit world in check. When her childhood friend Tadahiro—the guy she’s always had a crush on, the guy who has a freaky left eye and a bit of a Mr. Hyde complex—returns to town targeted by dark forces, Yuzu organizes a school Miko Committee to battle evil.

Impressions

The ragtag bunch of miko wannabes is standard high school comedy fare, but then that’s the whole point. There’s the short cynical shutterbug Chika (Kato Nanae, Ahiru from Princess Tutu) and the Tomo-like genki girl Seiko. Izumi is obsessed with Chika’s cuteness, and Shidsuka is rich and dignified.

The interesting thing about Asagiri no Miko is that it manages to pack a normal episode’s worth of action and comedy into only 12 minutes (it originally aired together with Earth Defender Mao-chan). That just goes to show how much fluff is in the mahou shoujo world.

Unfortunately, as the later episodes rush forward with the main conflict they have lost much of the humor which characterized the show early on. Still, AnM is decent entertainment for four and a half hours of your time if you care at all for the genre.

Random Thoughts

Hayashibara Megumi sings the OP & ED and plays Yuzu’s older sister Kurako.
