Synopsis

Momomiya Ichigo (13) is thrilled to be invited to view the Red Data Project (Endangered Species) exhibition with her crush, Aoyama. While there, she is imbued with the strength of the Iriomote Mountain Cat so that she can fight the evil aliens and their heinous chimera animals. Magical catgirl Mew Ichigo is soon joined by a bunch of similarly-themed friends to form Tokyo Mew Mew.

Impressions

Sailor Moon meets Captain Planet!

What can I say, the show bears a striking resemblance to Sailor Moon but with higher-quality animation. It’s very cute, with plenty of transformations and the requisite nonsense magical phrases—“Mew Mew Strawberry Metamorphosis!”—plus lots of characters named after food: Ichigo (strawberry), Mint, Pudding, Lettuce, Zakura (pomegranite), Pie, Tart…

In spite of its loose environment-friendly theme, don’t expect TMM to be Ferngully. The show is standard shallow shoujo action: saccharine characters, light romance, monster-of-the-week. It is a nice distraction but nothing I’d add to my DVD collection.

The OP and ED are both very cute and catchy, especially the MiniMoni-ish ED with its accompanying chibi animation.

Random Thoughts

Momomiya Ichigo translates, more or less, to Peach Meow Strawberry. Need I say more?
